More than 50 shots at Iceland Fashion Mall, a suspect held
A gunman in Iceland Fashion in Newport Beach apparently fired more than 50 rounds in a parking lot at the mall busy Saturday before he was apprehended by the police, according to authorities.
Marcos Gurrola, 42, Garden Grove, was in the parking lot near Macy arrested shortly after allegedly pulling shots to 16.30 clock, said Kathy Lowe, a Newport Beach police spokesman. The Bike Patrol officers arrested Gurrola, as he stood near a white Honda.
Police searched the shopping center, but not all, who was injured by shots taken appears to be either in the air or in the ground found.
More than 50 rounds of pistol was recovered at the scene, said Chief Deputy David McGill. A gun was also recovered at the scene, but the police did not reveal more details about the weapon. Landmark state assault-weapons law, which came into force in 2000, prohibits the use of firearms magazines with more than 19 bullets.
The mall was packed with holiday shoppers at the time of the shooting. Some shops were closed immediately, and many buyers posted messages on Facebook and Twitter say they were locked inside.
Nassef Shopper Dena said she and another person walking towards Macy as people began to scream and run.
"With what happened in Connecticut, we were freaking out," she said. "He was like a madman, people leave the business."
Ann Butcher, an employee at Macy's, said she was on the terrace of Whole Foods when the people running and screaming. She said that some women fled and left their wallets.
"It was very frightening," she said.
Shoppers Eric Widmer said he was in Barnes & Noble when he saw a rush mother and daughter in tears. He said he heard someone yell, "Shooter!"
He said he was able to leave the library and to Macy's, which he could not escape.
"I thought, 'Great, I can get scared twice," he said. "Lightning Strikes Twice".
One person was injured to flee, but the injury was not as serious.
